Lead Software Architect – Critical Systems Infrastructure (Hot Startup!)

Well funded startup with a solid engineering and management team in place. Working directly with the Co-Founder & CTO.

CTO is seeking a high-powered Software Architect to lead and coordinate the overall design & architecture efforts of the company’s scalable infrastructure (nodes of Hadoop clusters) that will support their core products: very HIGH-volume, web based real-time analytics decision engine and sophisticated learning engine. The CTO is looking for an accomplished software engineer that has over the years evolved into a highly skilled Software Architect with expertise in Large scale system design and implementation with a focus on availability, scalability and reliability. This Architect will manage the design tradeoffs that developers make every day, and judge how much time to spend optimizing a part of the system and when to push it out the door early for business reasons. The right candidate will have depth and current experience in a few of these areas: parallel computing frameworks, Hadoop/HDFS, MapReduce, big data analytics, machine learning, ETL systems along with high-performance concurrent Java.

BS/MS in Computer Science (or closely related) with 8+ years of experience. High-Performance Java is a must. This will have to be someone the CTO can trust without a lot of oversight, so the match has to be solid!

This is absolutely a tremendous opportunity for someone to work directly alongside the CTO/Co-Founder and the rest of the founding team. Highly visible position with a key role in shaping the company’s vital infrastructure.

Location: Cambridge, MA.

Salary: to commensurate.

If you think you can fill these shoes please send your resume to Jamie LeBlanc, Co-Founder & Managing Partner jamie@biviumgroup.com with ‘ Lead Software Architect – Critical Systems Infrastructure ‘ in the subject for confidential consideration.

High-Performance Database Software Engineer

July 31, 2009 by jamieleblanc

$2,000 cash referral bonus being offered for this position….paid out in full 30 days after individual starts.

Bivium has placed two software engineers with this company in July. Company has now asked us to recruit them a high-powered Database Software Engineer with core RDBMS internal development experience. Salary to 140k+.

Long-time Bivium Group client, with numerous engineering placements over the past 3 years. Partnered closely with the Vice President of Software (hiring manager) and have known for several years. This is a small “insulated” software product division (via acquisition a few years ago) of a much larger global Financial Services Software Company. This software product division is a major “strategic asset” to the parent company and will continue to innovate. The core product is a high-performance, highly scalable enterprise class application developed in Java and used on Windows operating systems with MySQL, Time Series, and several other real-time data feeds that are tied into the product.

This team has not had any layoffs and has only lost a few engineers over the years due to national attrition. They are now back in *growth mode* not replacement mode. Engineering team is about 20 in total, with about 10-12 in Boston. Budget for multiple software engineering hires for Boston.

Database Software Engineer/Architect (core database engine development, time-series…)

**This is NOT a DBA position or someone who has done database development using SQL.**

Our client is looking for software engineers who have actually developed the databases themselves, and ideally have worked on column-oriented or object-based databases. The job entails further development of the company’s time-series database.

Our client would especially like to see candidates who have worked for one of the following companies:

Greenplum
Vertica
Progress Apama
Sybase (especially Sybase IQ)
KX
Xenomorph
Infobright
Paraccel
SunGard – FAME

Salary: to commensurate, which should be in the 120 to 140k range. Package also includes bonus and excellent benefits.

Location: Boston, MA.

If you’re interested in joining a truly top-notch team of software engineers and have the hard core database internals skills our client is seeking, then please send your resume to jamie@biviumgroup.com for confidential consideration.

“Jamie helped me find a new position when I moved to Boston. He made the grueling process seem like a breeze! Whether it be from knowing a lot of vital information about many different relevant companies in the area, to organizing the hectic schedule of interviews and on site interviews and hr chats to being my point of contact with all of the companies, relaying my inputs in a way that made my position even stronger. I would recommend Jamie to anyone interested in a similar position in the area. Couldn’t have done it without him!”

“One of the things I valued most in working with Jamie is that throughout the process, he kept an open dialogue with me, and gave more consideration to what kind of work and companies I was interested in than trying to steer me toward some position that he already had in mind. I have and will continue to recommend Jamie to anyone looking for a placement specialist in the Boston software industry, and would gladly work with him again.”

Software Engineer (sophisticated concurrent Java skills required) Well funded new Startup via Jamie LeBlanc, The Bivium Group

May 29, 2009 by jamieleblanc

Well funded, early stage software startup seeks an experienced and dedicated software engineer to join their small core engineering team. As part of the core engineering team you will work closely with the founders in a fast paced challenging environment to help shape the technology landscape and culture of their core product. If you enjoy working on high volume platforms, architecting solutions to large scale problems, writing clean code, hate spaghetti code and want to be involved in building a company from the ground up then please inquire. We are working directly with the Co-Founders and VP of Engineering.

The right candidate will have strong concurrent programming skills in Java that was part of a real-time or near real-time software system. Having been part of a small, fast paced (agile/scrum type) development team is a must. Developers coming from bigger companies with large engineering team(s) and lots of resources will not be a good match. Startup experience is highly desired, borderline must.

Responsibilities:

- Help the engineering team design/develop/scale their core software and web based optimization platform, which will provide end-users the ability to view and analyze streams of on-line information (specific to their high in demand needs) and make decisions all in real-time.

- Code high-volume software using primarily Java.

- Work closely with Statistics/Analytics team to implement algorithms.

- Innovate to improve their core technologies.

- Think outside the box / be highly creative.

- Be willing and able to learn new technologies.

- Help build report interfaces and data feeds.

Requirements:

- B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related field

- 5+ years of commercial Java development with a very strong understanding of Java concurrency.

- Experience with large scale distributed computing (MapReduce, Hadoop, Cluster Computing etc.).

- Scalability / Redundancy / High volume / Real-time environments.

- Self-motivated and reliable a MUST.

Compensation: salary to commensurate. They are serious about hiring top talent and will be highly competitive for the ‘right candidate’.

Location: Boston/Cambridge – accessible by T. [* my client wishes to remain anonymous with regards to this job description, but I am able to disclose their exact Boston/Cambridge location to potential candidates *]

Those interested and truly qualified should send their resume to Jamie LeBlanc, Co-Founder & Managing Partner of The Bivium Group via jamie@biviumgroup.com with “Concurrent Java” in the Subject. Candidates for the specific opportunity must be U.S. Citizens or have Perm Residency / Green Card. Candidates should also be local to the Boston / Cambridge area or be willing to commute daily (every work day) to the office. Out of state candidates will not be considered, unless experience is absolutely dead-on and could relocate reasonably quick.

I’m sorry, but only those who are seriously qualified for this specific opportunity will be contacted. Otherwise, your resume will remain confidentially on file and will be considered as new opportunities arise. In all cases, resumes will never be submitted or distributed without the candidate’s explicit ‘go-ahead’ which only comes after a particular opportunity has been discussed. You cannot become a ten year veteran in the Boston Software Recruiting industry (like myself and Bivium’s other co-founder) by matching buzz words and slinging resumes I assure you.
